Heavy rainfall has battered parts of Britain across the country causing the Environment Agency to issue more than 200 flood warnings and alerts. Britons are preparing for a weekend washout as further downpours are anticipated on Friday. Several Met Office weather warnings remain in place, but which areas are at highest risk according to the Environment Agency?

On Thursday, severe rain caused travel chaos across the south west and beyond.

The main dual carriageway through Cornwall had to be closed near Hayle where homes and shops had already been affected.

Startling footage of the A30 in Cornwall revealed several feet of brown floodwater on the roads, as well as flood water rising against shop doors and windows in Hayle.

In total, around 50 homes had to be evacuated as a result of the poor weather conditions.

The region is likely to be the worst affected by the rainy weather as a five-day weather warning remains in place across the area, ending on Sunday.

Devon and Cornwall Police yesterday declared a major incident in response to the Hayle flooding.

As many as 47 flood warnings and 197 flood alerts are currently in place across the UK.

According to the Environment Agency, flood warnings are issued for regions where flooding is expected and immediate action is required.

Flood alerts cover areas where flooding is possible and the Environment Agency advises preparedness.

Mainly the flood warnings and alerts in effect are located across England.

The Met Office has also issued several yellow weather warnings for rain for the coming days.

There are three warnings in effect across the UK for Friday covering the south east of Scotland, the east and southeast of England including Peterborough, Portsmouth, London, Norwich, Kent and Brighton, and the southwest of England.

The yellow weather warning in Scotland is in effect until 9am on Friday and warns of heavy rain which has caused localised flooding and some travel disruption.

The other two warnings are in effect until midday on Friday and advise the areas should expect heavy rain leading to flooding and travel disruption in places.

Another Met Office warning is in effect over the weekend from midnight on Saturday to midday on Sunday.

The yellow weather alert warns there will be spells of heavy rain and showers which could lead to some travel disruption.

The warning is in effect across the south of the country from Cornwall to Canterbury.

The weather forecaster warnings advises a few homes and businesses could be flooded with bus and train service journey times taking longer.
