PLANS to build a footbridge linking a supermarket on Hayle harbour to the town centre have been supported by locals.

Harbour owners ING held a consultation at the end of last year on the £466,000 scheme to connect the new food store planned for South Quay with local shops.

The results, published by Cornwall Council, show more than 80 per cent of respondents in favour of the cheapest bridge, which is also most likely to be built quickly.

ING must provide a new bridge under the terms of its planning permission for a mixed use development but consulted on the position and type favoured by local people.

The four options included a fixed bridge connecting South Quay to Penpol Terrace or East Quay, a lifting bridge or a combination of an opening bridge and tidal defence.

Of 127 responses, 102 individuals preferred the fixed bridge between South Quay and Penpol Terrace.

Hayle Town Council will discuss the findings tonight and is being asked to identify its preferred option, to be considered when Cornwall Council makes the decision on which to pursue with ING.
