ANYONE looking for a bit of early Christmas cheer should head to Angarrack to see one of the finest displays of festive lights in west Cornwall.

The village has a large number of light installations, including the 12 days of Christmas, and three new ones this year celebrating the 25th anniversary of Christmas lights in the village.

The lights, organised by a stalwart group of around 20 villagers, were switched on at 7pm on Saturday by Shevaughan Ward, from Atlantic FM.

Fundraising events ahead of this year's lights display included duck races, jumble sales and treasure hunts, as well as some villagers creating their own displays.

Sandie Ireland, chairman of the Christmas lights committee, said: "We have so many lights, they are everywhere, and all the houses have their own lights.

Pleasure

"They provide a lot of pleasure to a lot of people, especially youngsters.

"As there is not a lot of parking in the village, the best way to see the lights is to park near the industrial estate and walk into the village."

Lights were also switched on over the past week in St Ives, Carbis Bay, Lelant and Marazion.

St Ives Mayor Ron Tulley switched on the lights in St Ives on a very wet and windy Friday night in front of a small crowd who gathered for mulled wine and mince pies, provided by the local Co-op store, while St Ives Concert Band and the KRUners led the carol singing.

Town clerk Louise Dowe said: "It was horrible weather on Friday night so we were pleased anybody turned up. The fundraising for the lights this year was carried out by the St Ives Chamber. It was invaluable as it was looking wobbly whether we could have the lights at all."

Marazion also faced a challenging night for their switch-on in driving rain and wind.

Nine-year-old Benjamin Gallaway was chosen to push the button for Christmas after his elf lights design was chosen as the winner in a competition at Marazion School.

Lights committee chair Paul Vincent, of the Blue Horizon B&B, said: "Lots of people turned up and it was well-supported considering what a beastly night it was. We had Breage Band playing in the Godolphin, who really helped us out on the night."
